Councillors approved plans for phase 1 of a two-way bike path around Evans Bay at a meeting on 8 March 2018.
The bike path, between Carlton Gore Road and Greta Point, will be a major recreational drawcard for the city, and provide a high-quality connection with the eastern suburbs. It will link to the Cobham Drive bike path now under construction, and to other new bike paths soon to be developed in Kilbirnie and to Newtown.
The next stage of this project is to complete the detailed designs, including revised plans to widen the six narrowest sections so the footpath, bike path and traffic lanes can be a consistent width all the way, develop construction plans, and carry out an independent safety audit. We expect construction to start in late 2018 and will be in touch with the local community before this.

The bike path for Evans Bay will make the route around this part of the coast even more of a drawcard. As a popular commuter route from the east, and visitor and recreational destination, the route forms part of Te Aranui o Pōneke/ the Great Harbour Way – our region’s goal to one day have a walking and cycling path all the way around Wellington Harbour to Sinclair Head on the south coast.
The design is appropriate for a busy through route such as Evans Bay Parade, which has a lot of fast-moving traffic, including trucks and buses.
