Project in development: Bike lanes with car door buffer
Why are we doing this?
Councillors approved plans for improved on-road bike lanes on Te Whiti Street at a meeting in March 2018. This route will connect with other new bike paths soon to be developed in Kilbirnie and to Newtown.
What’s next?
The next stage of this project is to complete the detailed plans. We will be in touch with the local community before the work happens.

Approved solution: Bike lane on both sides of the road with a car door buffer
Why this solution?
We’re making this street a safer part of the network by moving the existing painted bike lanes out a bit to provide a buffer space between people on bikes and parked cars. This quiet route provides a good connection between Rongotai Road and Coutts Street. The design is appropriate for this quiet street with less traffic and low vehicle speeds.
Impacts:
- One parking space will be removed at both ends of Te Whiti Street, making it safer for people in vehicles turning into and out of the street.
- The two-way traffic lane will be 5.7m wide.
